We've had a chance to visit with them, party with them and interview with them. We've even had a chance to practice our favorite Korean words. These words bring laughter because our pronunciation is probably not so good.

bi bim bap ~ salad with rice and fresh flowers

gam sa ham ni da~ thank you

pali pali~ hurry hurry

namu~ tree

yeo gi~ here

jeo gi~ there

mashita, mashta~ delicious

ggaji~ to or until

ban zak banzak~ bling bling

bbq~ barbecue

creo~ I agree

onyi~sister

opa~ brother

ahpa~ father

oma~ mother

These words came in handy in Korea, especially "Gam sa ham ni da" because we were and are filled with gratitude for the trip of a lifetime!

valhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01033652423144979540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-59418719604616773882010-05-11T00:44:00.000-04:002010-05-11T00:54:48.015-04:00They're heeeeerrrrrrrreeeeeee! Welcome GSE Team South Korea to BostonI just got back from the airport and the gang is all here: Mr. Eui Ju, Kim(Team Leader); Ki-Hong, Park; In Sun, Noh; So Young, Park and Dae Jin, Cho. Although I took some pictures, I'm not sharing just yet because I don't want to ruin it for the home stay families. They looked exhausted but happy to be here in Massachusetts visiting us.

It was sooooo nice to see our friends from South Korea here with us in MA. For some of them, it was their first trip out of their homeland so I can't wait to catch-up with everyone this evening at the welcome party and hear their first impressions. Remember our comments about everyone being on the phone? Guess who was the first one on the phone as soon as they hit the terminal? YES!, Ki-Hong, Park. Hilarious! Even he was laughing about it. Like I said, can't wait to hear the stories.

I should get to bed, shouldn't I? Hopefully I will be able to get some sleep. Pretty excited! See everyone tonight.carolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01088905527652970790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-61519651204880574332010-05-10T18:40:00.000-04:002010-05-10T19:12:07.537-04:00Tuesday April 27, 2010- A Busy Day in CheonanWe packed our bags and bid a fond farewell to our second "homestay" families in Cheonan. By car, we went to the Hoimyung Chemical Plant for a board room talk with coffee, tour and luncheon. The plant manufactures and sells chemical and electronics cleaners. The head office is in Seoul; the Cheonan plant opened in 1994. We were surprised to see four security guard dogs on duty at the facility. For our tour, we removed our shoes and donned slippers for cleanliness.
Next we drove to Dangkook University which is noted for its excellent medical school and hospital. We again were given coffee in an elegant board room with fresh flowers and an impressive video about the school. Later we had a tour, including an extensive tour of the hospital. We were even allowed to be in the radiology rooms with the doctors who were reading MRIs as they were being performed. We were also allowed into the large Emergency room!
To add to the excitement, we went to the local police station and saw people in their jail cells by television camera. At the Special Unit Division, we were given coffee and exchanged business cards. We told the police that we felt very safe in Korea and the police were delighted to hear that compliment. Then we watched as a group of talented children were given a musical presentation by the police band. They were also given hats and vests to wear. On the tour, we were impressed that children were allowed to drive mini cars, similar to those at a USA amusement park, and were taught correct driving habits. Obviously, responsibility and obeying the law starts young in Korea.
In the evening, we attended a huge, formal Rotary meeting with a large banner to welcome our GSE team. We listened to a speech from a group of Rotarians visiting from Japan. Next, Val gave a speech of introductions and deep thanks. We exchanged banners from our sponsoring clubs during a formal photo shoot. Following the meeting, we ate dinner at a lively restaurant where we met our new "homestay" families. It had been another busy, successful day!valhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01033652423144979540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-61620491532029872242010-05-10T00:07:00.000-04:002010-05-10T00:16:17.411-04:00Pictures from May 3rd<img style="float:left; We all knew that, like all things,it would have to end but the end always seemed so far away. Today was the first day of the Disrict Conference and that much closer to going home. We met at Hwalan's house and had the morning to roam the grounds. It was nice to be able to spend some time here since we really only slept here our first night. We got a chance to check our e-mail and explore the grounds. Some of us hiked down the hillside and across the river to see the baby goats. After being in the bustling city it was nice to relax in the country.

We then went to a spa resort to take part in the conference. Today's ceremony was devoted to giving awards to particular rotarians. We were happy to see the familiar faces, of our friends, which we made along our journey. We had an extravaggant buffet dinner with many distinguished rotarians from across South Korea!! After dinner and some dancing, we went back to our homestays for our final night with these families. We couldn't wait to see the rest of our friends tomorrow.Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14682409189363894600noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-77118807162859516852010-05-09T23:38:00.001-04:002010-05-09T23:42:09.242-04:00More pictures from Seoul - April 29th<img style="float:left; This time instead of the express train we jumped in the van and fought traffic. The once 30 minute train ride now took almost 2 hours. It gave us some time to unwind, relax, and take in the changing scenery as we left the country and headed into the city.

Our first stop was the War Memorial of Korea, which I was especially excited to see. We were surprised to see many artifacts that once were foreign but now have become familiar (i.e. the turtle ship, bow and arrows, etc). Although we had been to many museums, this was the first museum which outlined the Korean War. Prior to coming on this trip, I had a limited knowledge about the Korean War. My great uncle, James Bachand, served in the Korean War, so I was particularly interested in knowing more about this tragic war. Many Korean citizens were displaced during and after the war and millions of Koreans lost their lives during the North Korean occupancy. After touring this prosperous beautiful country, for approx. 25 days, it's hard to believe that this occurred only approx. 50 years ago. I think that it just goes to show how determined, devoted, patriotic and hard-working the Korean people are. Outside, we were able to watch the Korean Army practice for an upcoming performance and then toured aircraft and tanks.

Next, was a long ride to the Changgyeonggung Palace, which was built in 1418 by King Sejong. The palace grounds included many buildings, botanical gardens, forested walking paths, ponds and much more. After a leisure stroll, we headed for a shopping district. This area was unlike our previous Seoul shopping experience. We walked down old one way streets, listened to street musicians and shopped in souvenir and antique stores. After shopping, we walked up a nearby alley and had dinner. It was always surprising to me how we always had something new on the table!! There is just so much food. And I have to say GOOD food!!! The restaurant had a cozy feel as it was open to outside. We once again battled traffic and began the long journey back to Seosan. It was like everyday: an amazing day!!!Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14682409189363894600noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-30203637975631701952010-05-09T22:40:00.000-04:002010-05-09T22:44:03.600-04:00April 29th - continued<img style="float:left; We watched a video and obtained English translation tapes and ear phones. We listened to the history of money in Korea, as well as the rest of the world while touring the Komsco Mint Museum. Komsco makes passports and identification badges, as well as money. The company is very proud of its high level of technology and reputation for superb security.
Following a luncheon at the museum, our bus took us to a factory where alcoholic beverages are produced, packaged and delivered to distributors. At the end of the tour, we were allowed to sample the product, too, in a festive atmosphere!
Next, our bus took us to a museum dedicated to the excavation of the tomb of King Muryeong. It was the first known royal tomb in the world that identified its occupants. Muryeong became king at the age of 40 and ruled until his death at age 62. The tomb is about 1400 to 1500 years old and was excavated in 1971. It reveals an advanced civilization with outstanding artists.
Our last destination for the day was the Institute of Traditonal Korean Cultural Studies. It celebrates Korean culture and offers workshops for students and professionals. It teaches people to lead their lives as the owners of their lives. "Be a man doing good to others and the world, reigned by the truth. All people are linked together as one; you see energy flowing together. " These quotes were explained to us by our tour guide at the institute.
Following a delicious feast, we met with our new home stay families and went to their homes for refreshment and thanks for yet another fine day. A million thanks to our wonderful, generous home stay families!valhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01033652423144979540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-42889234060941549352010-05-03T09:30:00.000-04:002010-05-03T11:09:12.848-04:00Our final night (May 3rd)<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoYuxSdY3hwc9cYSMmHoCRj5PhZWwUrTz9gLJHYbSkJofuJijcf4RA-J-JuRhyphenhyphen0mHe6n_JqaNqKXW96X-EvR0A4xBLCIAlR_e2O6-vxYza0IaTs2cekwJgBCdykk16XD6jd_fcA_gInnjg/s320/IMG_5077.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467061042501586274" />

So it's our final night and we've come full circle. Our first day at Hwalan's house is now our last day. We're all here together writing our final blog. We missed a few days and planned on catching up on this today but it's already 11:40 and there's no time so we'll have to fill in the blanks from home. Today was our first day where we weren't on the go. There was no pali pali (hurry hurry) and we were able to sleep in. A place which once felt foreign to us now feels like home. We woke up and made French toast just like our first morning. After breakfast, we helped Hwalan and Soho weed grass clumps, till, and plant grass. It was the least we could do after everything she has done for us. Hwalan is the Korean's GSE Coordinator and if it were not for her careful planning, this trip would not have been so smooth. It was like a game of Tetris packing our belongings after 29 days of living out of our bags. We had our final barbeque dinner in Hwalan's greenhouse with our previous homestay families. Just as we thought we couldn't eat anymore kimchi...we discovered our favorite. All of us plan on keeping in touch with each other and all of the people we have met along this adventure. We would like to thank all of our homestays, the Rotarians, and our interpretors for making this an unforgettable life changing experience.Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14682409189363894600noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-79370175952660056052010-05-03T04:02:00.000-04:002010-05-03T04:13:54.481-04:00Monday April 26, 2010 Cheonan ContinuedAfter the bond market and shopping, we went to a center for mentally challenged adults and elderly people who are unable to care for themselves. The Rotary donated their van and donated many volunteer hours to the facility. Once again we sat in the board room, exchanged business cards, had coffee and took notes while a Rotarian told us about the facility. We took a tour and had a great time with the folks living there.
Later we visited the elegant Kim gyeng suk Hanbok store where traditional Korean hanbok clothing is purchased and/or rented. Val's homestay family invited the entire GSE team and our interpreter Christina to try on the gorgeous clothing and to pose for photographs. We had a delighful time. Hanbok is still used for formal times such as weddings. We also met VIPs at the Rotary District 3620 Convention wearing hanbok. We are deeply grateful to the Lee family and especially to Kim gyeng suk for the experience of wearing the hanbok. A million thanks!valhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01033652423144979540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-38117199197257222372010-05-03T03:32:00.000-04:002010-05-03T04:02:38.966-04:00Monday April 26, 2010~ Tour of CheonanWe began the day with a formal meeting at the huge, new City Hall of Cheonan. At these formal meetings, we exchange business cards, have coffee and take notes while guides tell us about the facility. It was built in 2002. There are about 5.6 million people in Cheonan and the city has forty-one Rotary Clubs. There are 101 Rotary Clubs in District 3620 with a total of
2,300 Rotarians. 80% are men; 20% are women. Most of the women are in separate female clubs.
The Samsung Headquarters are in Cheonan and the city is thriving. Christina acted as our interpreter. Many Korean ships have city names; the name of the ship that sank on March 11, 2010 was the Cheonan. The sailors on that ship had enjoyed a special relationaship with the folks of Cheonan. On this day of our visit, many sailors and military were coming to the magnificent front hall of the Cheonan City Hall to pay their respects at a memorial set up in honor of the departed sailors. The memorial featured photographs of the deceased sailors, as well as a replica of the ship. Needless to say, there was a somber, respectful feeling throughout the entire building.
Later we ventured to the new nearby sports center which is a state-of-the-art facility. It houses an enormous stadium. At the facility, we met our GSE Korean friend, Sunny. She works at the sports complex and will be part of the Korean Rotary GSE team that visits us later this month. Sunny joined us for lunch at a fancy restaurant. After an elegant luncheon, we went to the bond market where bonds are purchased and sold. Once again, we sat in the board room and exchanged business cards and enjoyed coffee while a Rotarian who works there told us about the bond market. Next we walked the Arario Design Center. We shopped for a pet cage for a homestay present and some luggage because our luggage is bulging at the seams.valhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01033652423144979540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-41458743748847360492010-05-03T03:09:00.000-04:002010-05-03T03:32:06.892-04:00Sunday April 11, 2010 Dangin~ Family DayAlthough we posted photos earlier, we have yet to write about April 11th in Dangin. We began the day by visiting a female temple. The female monks gave us a dignified formal tea ceremony. The temple was elegant in the traditional style. There was a kindergarten school nearby. Host families brought their children along for the day, so it was a delightful day with cheerful, well- behaved children. Next, we toured a winery where rice wine called makali is made. We were given samples to take with us for the farewell dinner. Our next stop was at a pear tree farm. We toured the farm and dyed t-shirts and a handkerchief with orange clay. Next we took a hot sauna in a room with a heated floor. Later we had a large, festive Rotarian farewell dinner where we all toasted one another. We thanked our home stay families for yet one more magnificant time in Korea.valhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01033652423144979540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-81412716590038558662010-04-29T09:06:00.000-04:002010-04-29T09:41:12.998-04:00April 29-Cheonan Homestay # 3; Moving to Seosan, our last stop of the trip: PANCAKES!/PANQUEI!!!Hi! We are here. Have not left South Korea or gotten ourselves involved in any national conflict. :) It has just been very hectic in Cheonan. They have been keeping us busy from dawn til dusk plus we have had 3 homestays in the 5 1/2 days we have been in Cheonan. As you know, moves are never easy and good-byes keep getting more difficult as we get closer to coming back home. Can everyone believe it has been almost 24 days since we left Massachusetts? Time flies when you are having fun!

I have to confess that I have been homesick. Not so much because of the physical place but I have been missing the pancakes my friend Myriam (and argue over with her 2 1/2 year old twins-hey when it comes to pancakes I don't care about your age, OK?!!!) makes and my monthly pancake breakfast at Ashley's. But wait until you hear this one!!!!!!! Yesterday, our homestay family (Rebecca and I have been sharing homestays while at Cheonan) surprised us with french toast, coffee WITH milk, apple juice, BACON and hot dogs for breakfast. Today, I took a bit longer than usual in getting dressed and Rebecca beats me to the dining room. All of a sudden hear head pokes in the doorway and she says, "Carolyn, you HAVE TO come out here. But close your eyes." So I'm thinking, oh no, please not another birthday cake for breakfast. :) I close my eyes, she directs me to the dining room table, tells me to open my eyes and I couldn't help out screaming, "PANCAKES. OMG, PANCAKES." I gave my homestay mom such a biiiiiiiiiiig hug that I almost choked her! Now, I can stay in Korea. As long as there is pancake mix and maple syrup Life is Good.

Time to change families and cities. As we approach the parking lot a familiar figure comes into view. It's Hwalan! Our GSE Coordinator and friend. I jump out of the car and give her a big hug (It's national Carolyn will hug everyone day). As the rest of the group arrives and sees her they all do the same. It is nice to see a familiar face and to have our trip start to come to full circle. We started in Seosan and will end in Seosan.

The trip to Seosan was very chill and full of reflections. Hwalan surprised us by stopping in Yesan at Mr. Busy's (he's the Rotary President in Yesan) where he gave each of us 4 DVD's full of our pictures and memories while in Yesan. The thoughtful details do not stop. We continued to Seosan and from the highway we saw a familiar house; it was Hwalan's house. Yep, right in the middle of the highway we stopped the car and took pictures. When in Korea, you know the rest.

It was a very chill day. We visited the Fort at Haemi, took pictures and videos with school kids on a field trip, went to the Temple that Hwalan and family visit. This Temple distinguished itself from the others we visited in that it is very small and the atmosphere is cozier, not as commercialized and we were able to roam the grounds and meditate under complete silence and beautiful skies. There were decorations everywhere as they are preparing for Buddha's brithday celebration on May 21st (national holiday in Korea). Had a delicious lunch of roasted duck while watching the somber ceremony on TV of the shipmen killed in South Korea.

Eating well, and plenty, and being in good health is key to the South Koreans. So our hosts are always preparing things for us that promote our health spiritually and physically. Aside from visiting temples and hot springs we also get-TAH DAH- FACIAL MASSAGES. They are spoiling us! So guys, when I get back home I don't expect anything less than massages, hot springs and good food. :). One of the Rotarians has her own place and treated the four of us to a 1 hour treatment. She is sooo sweet. Val will luck out b/c that is her homestay. I'm jealous!

Dinner! Buffet style, oh yeah. Guess who was there waiting for us, the District Governor himself and about 15 Rotarians plus some of their family members. Everyone takes such good care of us and our needs that it is overwhelming. Our friend, sister and interpreter Yu-Rim was there to save our lives once more. She has been looking out from day 1 and even took time this evening from studying for her mid-terms to be with us. We love you Yu-Rim.

Now at homestay with Umma and Apha (Apa). Watching Korean drama. Don't understand a thing but who cares all the dramas are the same. Rebecca and I got hooked on a morning drama that ALL of our homestay moms watched in the morning. We kind of concluded that is was the Korean version of Ugly Betty.

On our way to Seoul tomorrow. We promise to catch everyone up on our previous days over the weekend. Take care and see you soon....carolynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01088905527652970790noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-87294593383427118212010-04-26T06:50:00.000-04:002010-04-26T07:01:20.789-04:00Sunday April 25, 2010 Independence HallWe bid a sad farewell to our first homestay families in Cheonan. We are scheduled to have three host families in Cheonan, two days at each family. Next we drove to the Independence Hall of Korea. The museum contains powerful dioramma, documents and high tech movies to depict Korea's history from 1910 to 1945. It demonstrates "a history of struggle and survival for freedom and national independence against sordid and brutal imperialism." We made the decision to break for lunch and to spend the entire day at the museum. The weather was beautiful and we walked the grounds, looking at the displays and sculpture. Patriotism was evident everywhere. In the evening, we ate dinner with our new host families and went home with them. Each of us spent family time with the parents and children of our new "homestay." We are deeply grateful for the hospitality and generosity of our host families.valhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01033652423144979540noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-4658645731432953972010-04-24T19:59:00.000-04:002010-04-24T20:33:50.467-04:00Our last day in Asan and finally Seoul (April 22)Today was our last morning with our homestay famillies in Asan and time for another trade off to a new place and new faces. We meet at the Asan/Cheonan train station to meet our new friends from Cheonan and to head to Seoul for the day. We weren't sure if we would be able to make it to Seoul but it was on our list of must do's. Tony, our translator and friend from Asan, made this happen for us. So we bid farewell, greeted our new friends, and headed to take the express train to Seoul.

By train it only took about approx. 40 minutes versus the approx. 1.5 hours by car. As the train approached Seoul, we immediately begin to notice the contarasts to the rural areas and smaller cities which we have been in. Our friends planned a full day for us so as soon as we got off the train we jumped on a tour bus for our first destination. Our first stop was the National Museum of Korea. We cruised through the first 2 floors in our allotted hour taking in history. After many pali pali's (hurry hurry) from our friends we caught the bus and headed to the Namsangol Traditional Korean Village, where an empress lived. On our way here we passed the U.S. Army Yongsan Base and the War Memorial of Korea. Passing the War Memorial, I was able to view many statues, aircraft and tanks, which made me reflect on the hardships that Koreans have endured. The buildings in the village are original although they have been moved form their original location in Seoul. We had enough time here to view the time capsule, which includes approx. 600 items. It was dedicated in December of 1994, at the 400th anniversary of Seoul, and will be opened at the 1000th anniversary of Seoul. Many people from different countries, including the Mayor of San Francisco, attended the event.

The next stop was the N Seoul Tower which was my favorite. At the tower site, a Green Allure (fashion magazine) event was being set up. Many different green products, including Burt's Bees, attended the event. We headed up the tower, thankfully by elevator, for the most astonishing 360 degree views of Seoul. It was a perfect time to be on top of the tower because it had started to rain in some portions of Seoul and the sun was coming through. The panorama didn't appear real but more like a painting.

Next, was a stop in the largest and most popular shopping district in Seoul. I have to give our hosts alot of credit for keeping the group of 8 on schedule and together in this bustling city of 12 million. After some shopping and people watching, we headed back to the train station by subway. The subway station was extremely clean and efficient. It had walls with doors to protect people from the tracks and flat screen TVs. Soon we were back on the express train to head to dinner to meet our new host families. All of this in 7 hours!!! It was another great day!Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14682409189363894600noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-245840292794509334.post-27198164637613714122010-04-24T19:42:00.000-04:002010-04-24T20:02:51.428-04:00SEOUL!!!

matthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09958251206942109441noreply@blogger.com0
